Five out of six people receiving long-term care are receiving this care at home or in a community setting. In 2001 there were over 23,000,000 Americans receiving care in this way. There are important reasons for this increase in home care, including:

  • Financial: it is often less expensive to provide care at home than in a nursing home
  • Health: care provided in a home setting is most often healthier
  • Convenience: family and friends find it much more convenient to visit people at home
  • Contentment: people are generally happier in their own home.
  • Providers: in the past 10 years there has been significant growth in the number and quality of home care services and providers.
